What is an AVIF image?
AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec. Websites use it because a photo can be much smaller than a JPG with the same look, so images you download from shops, news sites and social platforms increasingly arrive as .avif.

Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?
Usually yes. AVIF compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture takes more space as a JPG.
What about AVIF with transparency?
